Yes, it is a fact that a person faces many obstacles in life because of dhrishti, the evil eye. And this is not merely an astrological phenomenon, even the dictionary defines “evil eye” as: “A look that is believed to have the power of inflicting harm.”

One whose body’s defence mechanism/immune response level is low is prone to fall ill at the drop of a hat. On the contrary, those, whose immune response level is high, remain unaffected. Much in the same way, not all are affected by the evil eye. However, according to astrology, it does affect the following categories of people.

The First and Fourth house are the domain of the lagnadhipathi/sukhadipathi/Rasiyadhipathi, that is, Chandra, Moon. A person will be particularly prone to the effects of the evil eye, if in his/her horoscope, the so-called adverse planets, that is, planets alien to the First or the Fourth house, either occupy or aspect these houses. In other words, Surya/Sun Sani/Saturn, Sevvai/Mars, Rahu or Ketu, should neither occupy or aspect the First or Fourth house, Chandra’s domain.

The unconvinced might still wonder whether there a phenomenon called the evil eye. We would only repeat what we have pointed out in the first paragraph. I have seen in China redemptory, parihara, objects dangling in front of houses to ward off the evil eye. In our own country, it is common to see a black dot on the cheeks of infants, especially the new-born, to protect them from the evil eye.

But is the evil eye so powerful a threat, the skeptic might yet be tempted to ask. Yes, it is so powerful that a mere look can even break a stone. Here, I am borne out by traditional wisdom, which says that one could survive after being hit by a stone, but not by the evil gaze:  Kall adi pattalum, kann adi padakoodadhu.

Why do you think people throw a pumpkin into the street, especially during Amavasya? The answer is simple: to ward of dhrishti or the evil eye. They believe that the act of throwing the pumpkin can nullify the effects of the evil eye on the house or the establishment.

Just as ants and other insects seek refuge in holes and crevices in a house, humans, who are prone to the evil eye, could fall a victim to diseases that might not respond to treatment. It is, therefore, imperative to protect oneself from the evil eye. At a later date, I shall reveal the measures one could employ to deal with the effects of the evil eye.
