Written by: Preethapreetha

Goddess Kushmanda is the forth manifestation of Maa Durga and is worhipped on the Navratri Chaturthi (4th day of Navratri).

The word kushmanda denotes word ‘ku’ ‘ushma’ and ‘anda’. The first word ‘ku’ means little, ‘ushma’ means warmth and ‘anda’ is denoted for egg. It is said that she created the Whole Universe like a little cosmic egg. As per mythology, Lord Vishnu started creating the universe when Goddess Kushmanda smiled like a flower which blossomed and spread light all over and eradicated darkness completely. Since she created the universe, she is called Adiswarup and Adishakti.

It is believed that Goddess Kushmanda provides direction and energy to the Sun. Hence God Sun is governed by Goddess Kushmanda. Also, Maa resides in the core of the Sun and thus controls the Surya Lok.

She has eights hands in which she holds Kamandul, bow, arrow, a jar of nectar (Amrit), discus, mace and a lotus, and in one hand she holds a rosary which blesses her devotees. Hence, She is also known as Ashtabhuja. She has a radiant face and golden body complexion.

Let us all worship Goddess Kushmanda and be blessed with good health and prosperity.
