Black Magic can destroy our fortunes

by Niranjana

We might be in the 21st century, yet many believe in witchcraft. One school, however, says that the so-called misfortunes are, actually, our own karma, inherited by us from our previous lives. This, we mistakenly imagine, are evils thrust on us by our enemies through witchcraft. In truth, it is a bit of both. It is due to our past karma that our enemies resort to black magic to harm us.

The following story is a classic example of somebody who suffered miserably due to these factors.

It was a time when the powerful Nandas ruled this ancient land. Dhana Nanda was the king. It so happened that one of his generals lost his way in a thick jungle, during a hunt. With dusk fast approaching, he became frightened, for there was none to whom he could turn for directions, stranded as he was in a forest. Confused and hungry, he stood there stupefied. Fortunately for him, just at the time, there came on the way a learned man. Vishnu Gupta was his name. The general requested him to show him the way to his kingdom.

“Don’t worry, my dear sir,” replied the learned man, “I am also going to the same place. Please follow me.” They went hand in hand, discussing on the way the scriptures, social awakening and assorted other topics. At length, they reached town.

“My dear young man,” the general told Vishnu Gupta, “though you lack both good looks and a sturdy body, you make up for it by your excellent knowledge of the scriptures and many other things. Indeed, you are a very intelligent man. I am saying this from my heart.” He did not stop with mouthing praises. “Come to the palace tomorrow. There will be a grand banquet. I shall introduce you to the king,” the general told Vishnu Gupta.

Vishnu Gupta accepted the invitation and turned up for the banquet at the palace, the next day. He was excited, for he had never seen a king in person, much less attended a royal banquet. All the guests had arrived. They were waiting for the host, the king. There were very few vacant seats, and Vishnu Gupta looked around anxiously for a place to sit. At last he spotted one, hurried in its direction and sat down to partake lunch. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the one reserved for the monarch. Just as he dipped into the dishes, the king arrived and surveyed the scene. He was stunned at what he saw. “Look here!” he shouted angrily. “Who the hell are you, and who invited you here?” he shouted at Vishnu Gupta. Noticing the commotion, the general ran to the spot and apologised to the king. “Your highness, I invited this learned man for dinner. He is a great exponent of the scriptures.” The general narrated in detail the intellectual skills of Vishnu Gupta. However, his praise fell on deaf ears, for the king was far from pleased with what had happened. “Get lost,” he shouted at the learned man.

Vishnu Gupta was equally angry. “You have misused your powers as a king to humiliate me in front of this multitude. Take my word,” he swore, “I will see to it that you are dethroned as king!” Uttering these words, he left the palace.

“This fool,” laughed the king. “This crazy, good-for-nothing learned man brags that he can dethrone me! Ha, ha, ha!” guffawed the monarch. “Let me see,” said the king, still laughing, as he left for his residential quarters.

However, Vishnu Gupta was not one to take a hurt lying down. “How do I bring down this haughty fellow?” thought the learned man, as he lay in his bed that night. “I cannot raise a force, strong enough to overthrow him,” he realised. “I cannot fight him alone either. I cannot also trust the neighbouring kings to oust him. Dhana Nanda is far too shrewd and powerful a ruler to be ousted by them, even with my help. Still, one weapon can bring him down. Not merely Dhana Nanda, no ruler can stop this weapon when it is thrown at him. Yes, only black magic can spell his doom,” concluded Vishnu Gupta.

To be continued…
